Great idea and I totally agree with the dial tone twist to it.
We thought of something to address similar problems and launched a website called Alertpedia (http://www.alertpedia.com) where you can set up alerts on your &quot;long tail / nano&quot; interests (not just news, even semantically rich information like travel fares, craigslist, earthquakes, traffic, weather, recalls, etc.) and only receive nicely packaged emails as things happen.

This is harder than it seems and we ended up cracking pretty tough scale problems. Let me know if you are interested in talking more.
