We thought of something to address similar problems and launched a website called Alertpedia (http://www.alertpedia.com) where you can set up alerts on your "long tail / nano" interests (not just news, even semantically rich information like travel fares, craigslist, earthquakes, traffic, weather, recalls, etc.) and only receive nicely packaged emails as things happen.
